TarHunt NeoTec Series of Copper Slug for factory length chambers.  update:  1-9-2021

Due to the loss of the 20ga NeoTec projectile forming dies in a UPS truck fire; the introduction of the 20ga NeoTec 365gr Copper slug round will be delayed. Replacement die just arrived. Check in later on for a more current update.

TarHunt is planning to release, three limited production slug rounds for the 2020 season. A 20ga, and 12ga will be loaded in both 2 ¾” &  3” standard shotgun hulls. The 16ga is a 2 3/4″ round. The 20ga, 16ga and 12ga rounds will all be loaded using a slight deviation of the patent 20ga Schrifle™ bore size Copper slug.   The NeoTec™ Copper slug will be loaded in a standard length production shotgun HULLS; thus eliminating all the issues caused by different chamber lengths in rifled barrel slug guns.

The 2.1” Schrifle™ 365gr 20ga Copper, non-sabot round, is designed for its own chamber length of 2.1 inches. Since is much shorter than any of the other factory length 20ga chambers; there is no conversion to a shorter chamber length is possible without changing the barrel itself. The 2.1” Schrifle™ will shoot reasonable well in a 2 ¾” factory chamber barrel only.   ALTHOUGH PERFECTLY SAFE, FOR BEST ACCURACY, 2 ¾” ROUNDS SHOULD NOT BE USED IN A 3” CHAMBER!

TarHunt will be releasing a new non-sabot NeoTec™ series of Copper (FLC)  slugs. Available in 2 ¾” for the shorter chamber length, and a 3” for the longer chambered barrels. Both the (FLC) Copper 20ga slug and the heavier (FLC) 12ga Copper are non-sabot, bore size slugs and are designed for use in the proper factory length chamber (FLC).

The NeoTec series will allow hunters, with standard factory rifled barrels, to access the overall performance of a bore size Copper slug regardless of their chamber length.   The NeoTec™ series of slugs are scheduled for late spring/early summer. As soon as the weather allows range testing for accuracy

Chamber lengths – a major accuracy issue:

When shorter cases are fired in a longer chamber than is required, although completely safe, accuracy and performance will suffer. The slug must jump, unguided with gas erupting all around it because the short case CANNOT seal off the longer chamber. The question then becomes did the slug enter the rifling straight in line or slightly turned off the center line and becomes a flyer? The nose of the slug must squarely enter the rifling to stop from being swaged off center in the bore. The proper length case, related to the chamber length, allows the case to keep the nose of the slug centered entering the rifling, because the straight section of the slug body is still well inside the case.

The major component generating the overall accuracy of the 20ga 2.1″ Schrifle™ is the 365gr Copper (green) projectile. It is the full bore size, non-sabot slug, based on the “Hollow Bullet with Truss”  patent design. A slightly redesigned version of that 20ga Schrifle™ projectile was produced for use with normal factory shotgun hulls and 2 ¾” or 3″ factory chambers.

STOCK NOTES:   McMillan Fiberglass Stocks: is now offering two different stocks for the Savage 220, using either the #1 or #2 barrel upgrade.  The model HTG-M40 is a normal hunting style stock and the A-3 stock leans toward the tactical style stock.  Call for details and make sure ask about a estimated delivery time (623-582-9635). It could be 4-8 months under some circumstances.        NOTE: When ordering either one of these fiberglass stocks, order it with a SOLID GLASS FILLER in the action area.  McMillan now has the proper inlet program for a Savage 220 for either barrel upgrade. Ask for the Savage 220/TarHunt inlet program.

Boyd’s Stocks:    Makes their Laminate stock for the Savage 220 and the Savage 212 slug gun. In either case the stock inlet is cut to the proper diameters for both the factory action diameter and the proper size barrel channel for factory barrels. One stock for the Savage 220 20 gauge and one stock for the Savage 212  12 gauge.  Any questions about this issue, please Call 605-996-5011 before ordering. Boyd’s Gun Stock company has a 90 days return/replacement policy along with a 12% restocking fee.

BE ADVISED:  For those of you who want to upgrade to a BOYD’S  STOCK on your SAVAGE 220; you must order a stock  for a model 220 SAVAGE Slug gun. Once and a while I will need OPENED UP the barrel  on a Savage 220 20ga Boyd’s stock to fit a TarHunt upgrade barrels.  Savage is now offering a 20ga model 220 with a Boyd’s Thumb Hole stock as a factory built slug gun. It should be cheaper than buying a new after market Boyd’s Thumb Hole Boyd’s stock separately.

Note:  For hunters who are thinking about buying a Savage 220  for the up coming 2021 season. Savage has introduced the AccuStock / AccuFit stock for 2021 fall season. It is a new 2021 design synthetic stock called the AccuFit / AccuStock. It has an adjustable length of pull and a comb Height adjustment built into the stock. Colors are Black, Gray and Camo. It is not your normal synthetic gun stock. It has an aluminum bedding block covering over 50% of the entire length of the stocks interior. Impressive synthetic stock upgrade for use on a factory slug gun. The 2021 Sav 220  with the AccuStock stock model is strongly recommended over any previous  Savage models!  The AccuStock stock will not fit any OTHER years of production of the Savage 220 slug gun. I would check it out before buying an older model as it could same you time and money.

NOTE:  A #2 Fluted barrel and the some Boyd’s stock will add a minimum of 1 1/4 pounds to the weight of a factory 220 Savage.   The #2 barrel alone adds 10 ounces to the weight of  a factory 220 Savage. Boyd’s Stock does offer lightweight stocks is some models.

More on the Two Different Barrel Upgrades for the Savage

I have talked to thousands of Savage 220 owners since November 2016. It has becoming obvious that some OF THE EARLY 220 Savage slug guns may have lose barrels, a poor fit into their stock, or the barrel may not be quite SAAMI spec. Some early  Savage 220 slug guns, with a factory barrel, when firing the 20ga Schrifle™ rounds only produce the same size groups as when using other makes of sabot ammo. When average size groups appears, usually the inside diameter of the barrel is larger than a SAAMI specification for a 20ga diameter barrel.

TarHunt offers a less costly  5 or round  6-round sample box (@ TarHunt discretion) for testing your barrel in  addition to the normal 10-round production box.  Only testing your barrel can tell if your ready to enjoy the 20ga new slug technology. The NeoTec 20ga is a 350gr Copper slug is loaded in 2 3/4″ or 3″ hulls for different length chambers .     “The first ever, RIFLE DESIGN, ammo for rifled barrel slug guns”!!!

ANY Custom chambers, other than a 3″ length chamber will add $60.00 to the cost of either the #1 or #2 upgrade barrel.

Upgrade #1:   TarHunt is offering a SAAMI spec, Stainless Steel, Premier, button rifled, matte finished barrel, in a (non-fluted) factory replacement format for the Savage 220. This SS Premier barrel has a slightly heavier wall thickness than the factory barrel and should  not require very little if any inlet adjustment.  The #1 replacement barrel is 24 inches long with a 1-24 twist rate. It has muzzle diameter of .825ths at the end of the muzzle brake and adds only a few ounces in weight to the gun. The barrel is threaded for the Savage action and has a 3″chamberThis barrel will be set up as a “change it yourself” but it will required access to an Savage Barrel nut Wrench and a 20ga Head Space Gauge

The #1 barrel upgrade cost is $275.00  as a do it yourself configuration.  They are only available with a 3″ Chamber.    Plus shipping

The #1 barrel ( 3″ length chamber) upgrade installed by TarHunt barrel is: $375.00 Plus shipping.

A very limited number of # 1 or #2 barrels with a short chamber may be available. Either in the  Schrifle 2.1 inch chamber or the standard 2 3/4 inch  chamber. Cost is $60.00 extra over  & above the barrel cost.

Glass bedding a Savage 220 action, fitted with a TarHunt upgrade barrel, into a Wooden Savage 220 replacement stock” is $110.00.     Opening the barrel channel, in a Synthetic or Wooden Savage 220 stock  to fit a #1  or #2  TarHunt upgrade barrel taper barrel is $30.00 extra. A ground recoil lug, if needed, is $32.50. Bedding the action into the factory synthetic stock can be done but it is NOT recommended.

The #2 barrel upgrade installed by TarHunt:  (shown in the Savage picture below and on the home page)

The Savage 220 slug gun shown there has the #2 Upgrade installed.  This #2 replacement barrel is 24 inches long, 1-24 twist rate, Stainless Steel, Heavy Weight Premier button rifled, matte finish barrel, muzzle break, Helical Fluting with a 3″chamber. The #2 barrel is a 12ga tapered blank with a 20ga rifled bore; then fluted for weight reduction, strength, and faster cooling . It has a muzzle diameter of .875ths at the end of the Muzzle Brake and adds approximately 10 ounces in weight to the overall gun. This #2  barrel has a much heavier wall thickness than the standard Savage 220 factory slug barrel but it will fit into the factory stocks. The  220 Boyd’s stock “will require” a barrel channel inlet adjustment because the out side diameter is a 12ga diameter tapper.

The #2 barrel update with muzzle brake is $475.00  installed.

NOTICE: Prices are subject to change without notice.     As much as a $90.00  charge will be assessed against any original gun work deposits for any cancellations on the owners behalf; to offset return shipping costs of the gun.

This $90.00 return shipping charge is an assessed fee; for the return of a non-completed slug gun, and has  NOTHING to due with the $100.00 UP FRONT (non-refundable) deposit for the Stainless Steel barrel.

For your reference:  The 20ga Schrifle™ slug must fit the barrel exactly like a rifle bullet fits the bore of a center fire rifle barrel. The 20ga Schrifle™ round was designed to be fired thru a SAAMI spec rifled slug barrel. SAAMI specification for a rifled slug barrel ONLY allows for a .002ths maximum tolerance period!

The Internal size of a SAAMI specification rifled slug barrel: On top of the rifling (bore diameter) is .609ths minimum and .611ths is the maximum diameters.  In the bottom of the rifling between the lands (grove diameter) is .618ths minimum and .620ths maximum diameter. The 20ga NeoTec Copper 365gr projectile is .619ths in diameter, exactly in the middle of the (grove diameters) .618ths min. and 620ths max.

“Watch for second series of bore size slugs”: The “NeoTec 365gr Copper” slugs, in both 20 & 12 gauge in 2 3/4″ and 3″ slugs for factory chamber. Fall 2020

After 30+ years: NOW- 12ga Performance From Your 20 Gauge Slug Gun! Designed for use in any make SLUG GUN with a 20ga Rifled Barrel only.

No longer just a slug gun, but not quite a rifle, it’s a Schrifle”

TarHunt-Premier “NeoTec” Copper 365gr (green) slug round is the High Performance 20ga Schrifle™ series slug; loaded in both the 2 3/4″ and 3″ standard shot gun hulls. For use in rifled barrels with standard chamber lengths. Order these round by the “length of you slug guns chamber”, period. Performance will be close to equal from one length hull to the other.

Introducing  the newest 20ga Schrifle series: “NeoTec Copper 365gr” bore size slug. The facts speak for themselves as seen in the accompanying photos below. Look at the real differences between the new the bore size 20ga NeoTec Copper 365gr (62 caliber diameter slug, before it enters the game) and the industry standard 45 caliber sabot projectile. The picture shows the actual REAL difference between a 62 caliber and the 45 caliber slug.  The 26% overall larger diameter of the NeoTec Copper 62 caliber slug vs. a 45 caliber slug is easy to see. The ratio of one to the other remains the same at any magnification.

For comparison purposes this photo shows a 1974 Kennedy .50 cent piece; next to a NeoTec Copper 365gr expanded slug that was fire into a ballistic gelatin block from between 45 and 50 yards away. That range duplicates about 70% of most deer taken with a slug gun. This NeoTec Copper 365gr expanded slug weights 302gr (an 83% weight retention) and it expanded to just over the size of a half a dollar! An expanded slug like the one shown, @1800 fps, and spinning at 54,000 rpm’s (when fired thru a 1-24 twist rate barrel), and weighting over 30 grains, acts just like a hole saw!

“The technology behind the NeoTec Copper 365gr slug”.

The NeoTec 365gr Copper series design is a example of “out of the box thinking .”  The “Hollow Bullet with Internal Structure”, patent number US 9,372,05 B2, uses a pressurized elastomer truss that is flexible enough to alow the thin side walls of the hollow copper slug to upset in size, to better fit your barrel diameter. After firing and the upset to the bore has taken place by the bullet side walls, the pressurized elastomer truss remains strong enough to support the thin copper side walls from collapsing inward while the slug is being forced thru the barrel. Correct implementation of these two events, in that order, is critical to insure proper flight requirements and the elimination of flyers. With this new “hollow bullet” design, a full bore size diameter bullet can be maintained, while greatly reducing its overall weight. Making it possible to load the same physical size bullet at higher velocities than its original full density configuration. [A solid copper bullet of the same size & shape could weigh over 750 grains]. Upon impact, the pressurized elastomer truss it allowed to rapidly expand outward thus aiding in the initial amount of fracturing of the o-jive (pointed part of the slug). The area in the nose section where the wall is the thinnest.

The “hollow bullet” design shown here uses an  full cavity elastomer truss. This design helps generate real expansion of a 99.9% pure copper bullet that will expand and not just shoot thru or implode on impact projectile [Sometime, in the near future, we will be hunting with “HOLLOW  Bullets” supported entirely by internal metal alloy truss. These projectiles will be made on a 3-D metal  printer] at even faster velocities.

The “NeoTec Copper 365gr” Premier Slug

The 365gr NeoTec Copper slug is the newest slug in the TarHunt 20ga Schrifle series. It is a high performance, full expanding, copper slug at 1800fps. It is flying at or near the same velocity as other popular sabot rounds, but it weights a full 100+ grains more!

The all new 20ga Schrifle NeoTec Copper 365 grains at 1800fps will be stable thru all known 20 gauge twist rates. The TarHunt NeoTec Copper slug is a premium full performance, bore size slug, and is on track to be largest diameter, heaviest, fastest, full expanding of all the copper slugs in the industry. While retaining as much as 85% of its original weight when used on thin skin big game. The bore size NeoTec Copper 365gr slug has a unique felt recoil. The slug generates a clock wise torque on the gun and requires two handed gun control, when testing off of a bench rest.

The 20ga NeoTec Copper  slug will also qualify as a “Green” non-toxic projectile for the areas that require a non-toxic slug.  The current trajectory data for the 20ga Schrifle series NeoTec Copper 365gr slug has been added below, next to the Raptor Alv 270gr data, so a side  by side comparison can be made. You may be surprised by the heavier slug. Only a 2″ trajectory arc, either above or below,  your aiming point, thru 150 yards when zero at the proper yardage.

Half Dollar Size Expansion, 82% Weight Retention, Flattest Shooting, More Energy Down Range.

Thank You

Thank you for your interest in the  20ga.”Schrifle”series  NeoTec  365gr Copper non-sabot slug round. All orders until further notice will be shipped directly from TarHunt. The webmaster has installed a  “blue buy now” tab on the opening home page as well as a normal ordering format under the ammo tab and under the hunting ammo drop down.

Accuracy Detail

The new 20ga Schrifle series: NeoTec Copper 365gr @1800fps and the Raptor Alv/Lead 270gr @1975fps slug will work thru all known 20ga twist rates. I feel the NeoTec Copper 365gr is by far the best choice for deer hunting with the 20ga Schrifle series of slugs. It is a very accurate slug, when fired in a SAAMI diameter barrel. A non-lead  (a green, non-toxic) maximum expansion slug with a high percentage of weigh retention.

Calculated trajectory: Current indications show the 270gr Raptor Alv/Lead high performance slugs @ 19oo+fps may be the heaviest weight slug usable at those velocities..    Note: the Raptor Alv/Lead 270gr data uses a 150yds zero and the drop looks much better than the 365gr Copper slug at 200yds. But look how high the mid-range trajectory is, using the 270gr**, at 100 yards and it has 15% less energy at 100yds and 17% at 200 yards.

Raptor Alv-lead core 270gr.**

-1.45            (12% less  energy @ muzzle)

3.07 **  (15% less energy @ 100yds)

150 ZERO
-3.31       (what is your aiming point?)
-8.07      (what is your aiming point; and 17% less energy)

Calculated trajectory:  In  comparing, the 365gr NeoTec Copper @1800fps to 270gr Raptor Alv slug @1975 fps. Notice that the NeoTec 365gr Copper shoots flatter and has more energy at 150yds.. The increased weigh makes it a much better choice for hunting thin skinned big game in the 150 thru the 200 yard range!

“Why does the 365gr NeoTec Copper slug use a 130yd zero while the 270gr Raptor Alv slug and all brands of sabot ammo, uses a 150 yard zero”?     Notice the trajectory’s number highlighted at 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards.  When using the NeoTec Copper 365gr it means that for the first 150 yards you have a total of a 4 inch maximum variation  in your trajectory curve. In the heat of the battle that means hold center and shoot, no guessing. But look (how low) it is at 200yd. Exactly my point, at 200yds all you have to do it to lay your horizontal cross hair right on top the back bone a squeeze the trigger. The 12″ of drop will place your shot in the heart/lung area.

“No guessing”, EVEN using a scope that has just a standard cross hair.  It’s a quick way of accurately taken shots from 50 thru 200 yards when your using the Premier “Schrifle – NeoTec” slug. No confusion trying to remember which cross hair to use. Along with a slug that has the energy to get the job done at 200yds.

Gel-block video

Look at this you tube video of a 8 inch square, 18 inch long, 21 pound gelatin block, (normally used to test rifle bullets). It was hit with the new, reduced load, 20ga Schrifle slug. The slug is a full bore size 62cal, 260gr. slug fired from a full 40 yards away using a 1-23tr. The lower your twist rate number (1-23tr) the more RPM”S the slug has to aid in cutting a bigger wound channel.

[gel video]

The gel block reacts to the impact of the 20ga “Schrifle” by producing 9-10 different severe shock  waves patterns as the slug moves thru the 17 inches of the gel block! If you look closely you can see the Raptor HP design  separating into 3 peddles, about 120 degrees apart. The peddles then penetrated out ward for Approximately 7 inches.  At the end of the video the 21 pound block is stood up on end and is flipped off the table. The multi-shock waves, seen here in this video, of a 20ga “Schrifle”  moving thru this gel block is a good representation of the wound channel trauma produced by a 20ga “Schrifle” slug going thru a 16″ thick Deer size animal!
