Lori Rau’s Whitetail Deer Hunt in Monroe County, NY

November 21, 2004

I watched this deer during the summer months while scouting and filling deer management permits on a farmer’s property. Then came bow season. I hunted hard throughout, but interestingly enough didn’t see him at all — that is until the last day of the season. The big buck finally showed up at my spot, but simply laid down and did not present me with a shot.

Frustrated and quite a bit angry, I reluctantly left at dark and decided I would hunt the same spot the next morning — opening day of gun season. To my amazement, when I reached my stand he was still there!!! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing!!

The rest is history! My 870 Remington and Lightfield slugs didn’t let me down. This deer is the biggest of four 8 pointers I have taken in the past 8 years. I couldn’t be happier.
