Bolt Action Rifled Slug Guns

Building one of the “Best Guns of All Time”

“It’s easier to get what you want, when you’re talking to people that understand what you need.”

He builds what have been called the “The most accurate rifled slug guns in the world”. His Rifled Slug Gun series of slug guns have been called “Revolutionary” and “One of the 50 Best Gun Designs of All Time”, (2009) by Field & Stream magazine. They are used by hunters, competition shooters and law enforcement agencies throughout the world for one main reason…”They consistently outperform the competition both on the range and in the field”.

Randy’s company, TarHunt Custom Rifles, Inc., was the driving force behind the research and development of the Lightfield “SameSite™ Accuracy” system using the Hybred-EXP series of sabot slugs from Lightfield Ammunition.  This “SameSite™ Accuracy” system is now the industries leader in sabot slug accuracy and technology.

Randy, along with Tony Kinchin, senior engineer and vice president of Lightfield, are responsible for both the testing and quality assurance of the Hybred-Exp as well as the Commander IDS Plus line of sabot slugs. Together, they are responsible for everything from the powder selection, product loading and accuracy acceptance tests.

Sabot Slug for Mossberg 835

Randy: I have a Mossberg 835 shotgun chamber in 3 1/2". I'm having trouble finding sabot slugs for it. I have found one place near me (Cabela's) that carries them. How much accuracy do I loose going to a 3" or even a 2 3/4" sabot slug? The only loss in accuracy that could possibly [...] Read More

Building Longer Range Shooter

Randy, I am interested in building a longer range shooter taking advantage of some of the new sabots available by Winchester, Horandy, Federal, and Remington. Of course, if Lightfield has something available that can match or exceed the new stuff in the area of long-range shooting, I want to know that too. Anyway, back on [...] Read More

Performance Difference with New 1oz Load

Why was the 16 gauge 15/16th oz load changed to the new 1oz load? Will I see any difference in performance or speed with the new 1oz load? FYI-the 15/16th loads were awesome and just hoping I can expect the same or better? Thanks. We have increased the weight of the 16 gauge Commander IDS [...] Read More

Ideal Length Barrel for a Slug Gun

What is the ideal length barrel for a slug gun? Is there any real advantage of longer over a shorter barrel? Thank you. Most all powders used in 2 3/4" shells will achieve full velocity in a 20" barrel. Some 3" slugs may need up to a 24" barrel to achieve max. Velocity. If they are fired [...] Read More

Best Slug for Mossberg 935

Randy, When using a Mossberg 935 with a rifled barrel, what would be the best slug to use a 3 1/2 or a 3". I guess if I can get good accuracy with the 3' and save a little shoulder that would be great, but if I had to take the kick to get the [...] Read More

Slug Type for Rem. 1100 3″ 20″ Barrel

Randy I have rem. 1100 3" 20" barrel which slug commander or elite. Dominick, I would use the "Hybred Elite" on deer size game and under, and the "Commander IDS PLUS" on game weighting over 300 pounds. The 20" barrel will work with either sabot slug. You may lose 50ft/sec.  Because of that barrel being 3 [...] Read More
