The Technology Behind Lightfield's Design

Lightfield Hybred™ Family

The Technology Behind the Hybred™ Design

The Lightfield Hybred™ Family (Maximum Expansion) of cartridges have a two-sided sabot that keys to four tabs on the slug itself [1][2]. Just like a badminton birdie the lighter wad or 'shuttlecock' stays attached to the slug while in flight, giving the projectile stability while supersonic and prevents shockwave deflection when the projectile becomes subsonic [4].
When the shell is fired the pressure causes lead from the slug to expand into these grooves, effectively locking the slug and sabot together, and forces the locked sabot/slug assembly to expand to the full barrel diameter and spin together as one unit [3].
Upon impact the maximum expansion of the soft lead slug (essentially a .62 caliber bullet) produces devastatingly lethal results. The Lightfield Hybred™ EXP is "The Standard by Which Other Slugs are Judged."

Lightfield Commander Plus™ IDS Series

 The Technology Behind the Design

The Lightfield Commander Plus™ IDS (Impact Discarding Sabot) cartridge has a sabot with four grooves on the inside [1]. The Lightfield IDS stays together as one projectile while in flight and, just like a badminton birdie, the lighter sabot gives the projectile stability while supersonic and prevents shockwave deflection when the projectile becomes subsonic [3].
When the shell is fired the pressure causes lead from the slug to expand into these grooves, effectively locking the slug and sabot together, and forces the locked sabot/slug assembly to expand to the full barrel diameter and spin together as one unit [2].   Upon impact, the soft lead actually mushrooms out of the top of the slug, producing controlled expansion. When you hit a big game animal with what is essentially a .73 caliber bullet (.67 caliber for 16ga), the results are devastatingly lethal [4].

*12 Gauge 3" Lightfield Commander IDS Ballistics Data*Slug guns MUST be zeroed (sighted-in) while the slug is supersonic (above 1220 ft/sec in velocity). Therefore you must zero your gun 1 to 1-1/2 inches high (see above data for the slug you will be shooting) at 50 yards, absolutely centered above your point of aim. You will then be dead-on zeroed at 100 yards because gravity will see to it. Zeroing at 50 yards also cuts down (by approximately 60%) your chance of adjusting windage error into your scope setting.
